Press Release Regarding the Allegations in the Media Today

Republic Of Türkiye Ministry Of Foreign Affairs 21.08.2014

No: 274, 21 August 2014

The unfounded allegations by some media outlets today (21 August) regarding the hostage situation of the staff of the Turkish Consulate General in Mosul are examples of grave irresponsibility. Abuse of issues such as national security or well-being of our citizens is in no way an acceptable attitude that can be considered within the framework of the freedom of the press.

On such a sensitive issue, journalism and media ethics should be respected, and unfounded, speculative and irresponsible publications should be carefully avoided in order not to mislead the public opinion. We call upon all media organizations to demonstrate the necessary sensitivity on this issue and call upon the public not to give credit to such publications.

All our relevant institutions continue to work in coordination to ensure the safe and sound return of the staff of our Consulate General in Mosul as soon as possible.
